CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's Brown Sugar Bakery is getting into the spirit ahead of next week's Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by the South Side bakery a quick bite back in 2021, and with only one week to go before the DNC takes over Chicago, the team at Brown Sugar is rolling a new cake in honor for Harris.

It's called the Kamala Cake and was described as a twist on the traditional German chocolate cake — the vice president's favorite.

"What I wanted to do with the German chocolate cake was really just put a touch on it that kind of elevated it, made it more light and exciting, like the campaign," said Brown Sugar Bakery owner Stephanie Hart.

That twist is done in the form of coconut, a whipped cream frosting and pecans.

"Even though she was Vice President of the United States of America, even though she came to 75th Street, and that was just amazing, I didn't envision her having a run at [the presidency], and, we have to admit it, this is a real run," Hart said.

Hart is hoping the cake is a big hit during next week's DNC.

"We're going to take the opportunity to do as much as we can to show people that Chicago is a great city and we're part of an amazing food scene," she said.
