A celebration is held Thursday for the re-naming of a building in the Loop after Illinois' longest-serving Secretary of State.

The building at 115 S. LaSalle St. in the Loop is now officially known as the Jesse White State of Illinois Building.

Surrounded by other state and local leaders, Governor Pritzker spoke at the dedication ceremony.

"He championed good and honest government at a time when the state needed it most, putting us on a path to real progress," Pritzker said. "He is and always has been a statesman. One of our greatest statesman."

White, who served as Illinois Secretary of State from 1999-2023, is the longest-serving and first African American to hold the office.

"I can probably say that this honor has given me my hall of fame and I shall cherish it always," the now 91-year-old White said.
