(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Italian Beef sandwiches are having their moment in the national spotlight, and one local brand wants to cash in.

Joe Buona III is the owner of Berwyn-based Buona Beef, which is a long time seller of Italian beef sandwiches.

The dish is in the spotlight, thanks to the FX series “The Bear,” which is about a gourmet chef who returns to Chicago to run the family beef stand.

Buona says the show captures the experience of working at an Italian beef stand — with a few notable exceptions.

"They make the beef and gravy separately, while original Italian Beef stands like ourselves, we do it like we make it in your home.  We put the beef in big pans, the drippings come off, and that's your gravy," Buona said.

Buona tells the WBBM Noon Business Hour that the show is perfectly timed. Buona Beef  and Rainbow Cone are in the process of setting up franchises outside of Chicago.

"I'm super grateful that 'The Bear' has launched the Italian Beef sandwich on a national stage, especially as we start to expand nationwide as a company," Buona said.
