A massive, wind-whipped fire destroyed 28 units in seven cabins Monday at Grand Bear Resort near Starved Rock State Park.
The fire, reported to have started on the porch of one cabin, spread fast, according to the Assistant Fire Chief in Utica, Drew Partain.
Sixty fire departments, which included 200 firefighters, were involved in fighting the Utica blaze.
“Once that first building became fully engulfed in fire, it started throwing hot embers and ashes,” Partain said. “All of the buildings that were burnt were directly north — downwind — of where the fire started. All of those embers were landing on the other buildings.”
Firefighters worked to save other buildings, but water had to be trucked in. because there were no hydrants.
Partain said 40 trucks were bringing water, which amounted to 5 – 10 million gallons, he said.
There were no injuries, and the Assistant Chief says the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
