(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As Chicago Bears rookies reported to minicamp over the weekend, new quarterback Caleb Williams appeared to be setting every positive example he can behind the scenes at Halas Hall.
Third round lineman Kiran Amegadjie hasn't been able to take a snap with Williams, because he's still recovering from a college injury. Amegadjie's eyes, though, work just fine, and here's what they're telling him:
"[Williams is] a big presence in the locker room already. He's a good leader. He's a person that works hard, I can tell. He's always the first one in, in the morning … so I think he's going to be a great leader for us on this team."
Williams said that to lead, you have to first learn to follow — and added that he's leaning on veterans for that information. He looked confident, though, while running minicamp plays in front of reporters this past weekend, and quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph had a glowing review of Caleb: The Student.
"He's one of those guys that he wants to know 'why,'" Joseph said. "Last night, probably about 10:30 or 11 o'clock, he texted me: 'Hey, why are we doing this here? Why are we blocking it like that? Isn't that his guy to block?' He just wants to know. He wants those answers, and when you've got a guy like that, he's hungry for it. You love to know that because now he becomes a coach on the field."
Before minicamp began, Williams said he enjoys teaching concepts to his teammates, not only to help them get smarter but also to prove to himself that he has those concepts down pat.
