CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — If you're having a hard time getting a response to non-emergency calls in Chicago, a new report found you're not alone.

Police officers whose staff the non-emergency call center met the response time goal during a sample period in April just 38% of the time. The officers are on desk duty for a variety of reasons.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported callers to the city's non-emergency 311 lines have experienced long delays at times. One woman said she made at least 20 calls and spent four hours trying to file a non-emergency report for her stolen car.

Records the paper obtained for the last 12 days of April showed the average wait time for an officer to pick up the line was 2 minutes and 46 seconds. The longest delay for an officer to answer was a half hour.

More than 12,000 calls were made to the alternate response section during that timeframe. They included calls transferred from the 311 center and those made directly to the unit.
