CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of residents of Calumet City won’t have to go the grocery store for Thanksgiving turkeys this year, as the south suburb is giving away $10,000 worth of turkeys Monday morning.
Calumet City is giving away about 650 turkeys for free to residents. The first 72 are for needy families working for the Calumet City resource center, the rest are available on a first come first served basis.
The food service and hospitality company, Delaware North, is donating the birds.
Regional General Manager Osi Imomoh said it will be a drive-through giveaway following COVID-safety protocols.
"Similar to curbside pickup, so those that are getting turkeys can sit in their car. We will bring the turkey out, put it in your trunk, and then you can get going. So it is going to be as safe as possible and follow all the guidelines that there are," he said.
“We understand the times we are in - tough times with things going on just within this city, within the country. We want everyone to be safe,” he said.

The giveaway starts at 11 a.m. Monday at the River Oaks mall, the site of a proposed casino.
Delaware North is one of four applicants vying for the south suburban license, which the Illinois Gaming Board is expected award next year.
