PECATONICA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There could be a break in the case of two men who disappeared in Northern Illinois almost 50 years ago.

After an unusual discovery by a group of fishermen, Winnebago County authorities recently pulled up a metallic brown 1966 Chevrolet Impala out of the Pecatonica River.

That same vehicle is believed to be the one that then 75-year-old  Everette Hawley and then 65-year-old Clarence Owens were last seen in back on Feb. 19, 1976.

Investigators have said the business partners attended a political rally, a diner and finally a farm auction near the Winnebago-Ogle County line, but we're never seen again.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office is calling an intense, multi-agency investigation and one that is ongoing. They say they will continue working to get to the bottom of the disappearances.
