(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Devoted Catholics have a slight dilemma on their hands this St. Patrick’s Day: to eat corned beef or not to eat corned beef.
This year, St. Patrick’s Day lands on a Friday, and Catholics are told not to eat meat on Friday’s during Lent.
In previous years, Chicago’s archbishop has issued a general dispensation to let the faithful off the hook. Cardinal Cupich did that in 2017.
This year, however, he is not issuing a general dispensation. But the leader of the Chicago Archdiocese says Catholics who eat corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day may substitute the rule with another form of penance or an act of charity that benefits the poor.
No need to worry about the rule this Saturday, and Old St. Patrick’s Church has its annual civic celebration followed by its Shamrockin’ The Block fundraiser, where there will be plenty of corned beef.
