(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicagoans looking to celebrate Day of the Dead this weekend can head to Pilsen for a special 5k fundraiser.
Thousands of people will be racing through the streets of Pilsen on Saturday for the annual Carrera de los Muertos, or Race of the Dead.
"When our loved ones pass away, Dia de los Muertos is a great way to honor and remember and to keep their memory alive. And so this 5k mission is to do just that. It's to honor and remember our loved ones."
Maya Solis with UNO - It Only Takes ONE says the race is also a fundraiser. One program UNO works with is RunHer, which empowers and trains middle school girls in Pilsen to run.
"It's more of a holistic approach as well. Their mental and physical well being is very important, and I just can't wait for it to see them cross the finish line. "
She says the race is a staple of Day of the Dead celebrations in Pilsen.
"When you run this race, when you walk this race, you feel that celebration, you feel that pride."
