CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cardinal Blasé Cupich greeted Catholics for in-person mass this Easter Sunday – some for the first time in a year.

Temperature checks instead of missalettes.

Hand sanitizer instead of holy water.

Holy Name Cathedral welcomed guests for a socially distant and masked Easter mass said by Cupich.

“We cannot understand the resurrection into us. We’re willing to allow the Lord to come in those moments of our own dying, to bring His new life there,” Cupich told congregants.

Since the church was limited to 20% capacity, Cupich made sure to greet those watching at home, joking that he heard seats inside the cathedral were the toughest ticket to get in Chicago.

Anna McCoy came with her grandparents and was happy to celebrate the holiday in person.

“It’s harder to feel that connection through online church or through video. So, I think it being Easter adds a whole other level of excitement,” McCoy told WBBM.
