(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Fire Department has added the badge of Lt. Kevin Ward to its Memorial Wall Wednesday, one year after he died of injuries fighting a house fire.
The fire code 3-3-5 – three bells, three bells and five bells – signifying the returning to quarters rang out at the Fire Academy.
There the department paid tribute to the Lieutenant known as an adventurer.
A scuba diver, rock climber, sailor, skier, hiker and once a deckhand on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska. He became a firefighter in 1996.
"He was drawn to this career by his adventurous and courageous spirit, but also out of a desire to serve his community," Mayor Brandon Johnson said.
Fire Commissioner Annette Nance Holt called Lt. Ward "a remarkable firefighter."
"Retiring this badge does not mark the end of Lt. Ward's legacy — it immortalizes it," she said.
Kevin Ward was a 27-year veteran. He was 59 when he died.
