CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Fire Department said the threat is over from an ammonia leak at an ice making company on the Southwest Side.

The Chicago Fire Department called a level-two hazmat and sent several ambulances to the area around Home City Ice, in the 3600 block of West 59th Street. Ammonia gas had leaked from a tank in the plant and was filling the air in the neighborhood.

For over an hour, the fire department recommended people who live in the area remain inside their homes. That suggestion was lifted, as the tank holding the ammonia was shut off. The gas dissipated.

“We flooded the sewers up, flooded the water, had open hydrants, and that caused some more dissipation. We were getting some readings in the sewer, but that’s down to zero now, and we’ve turned the hydrants back on,” said fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

Langford said fire crews were going door to door in the West Elsdon community, asking people if they were doing ok. He said no one needed to be taken to a hospital.
