CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Coast Guard ended a charter trip on Lake Michigan on Saturday saying the boat was operating illegally.
There were a dozen passengers on Knot My Boat XVII as it was anchored inside the break walls of the area known as the Playpen between Ohio Street and Oak Street.
The Knot My Boat charter company operates a number of boats.
The Coast Guard said it found a number of problems with this one when it was boarded.
They included no Certificate of Inspection, no appropriately credentialed mariner and failure to have the appropriate type personal flotation devices onboard.
The Coast Guard takes this seriously. Last month, a charter captain found to be operating illegally was sentenced to a year in federal prison. Lt. Danny Hicks, Senior Investigating Officer at Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago, said “Our top priority this summer is passenger safety.”
