Revelations about an influential union leader have sparked a move to rename a Chicago neighborhood post office, and high school students in the area are being invited to take part.
The U.S. Post Office at 1859 S. Ashland Ave. in Pilsen has borne the name of the late labor leader Cesar Chavez since 2003, but institutions across the city have been forced to reconsider tributes to Chavez following allegations that he groomed and sexually abused girls and women tied to the United Farm Workers.
Now, Chicago Congressman Jesus "Chuy" Garcia wants school teachers in Pilsen to ask students for ideas about whose name should replace Chavez'.
Over the last month, the Chicago Federation of Labor covered a plaque honoring Chavez on the Haymarket Memorial in the West Loop, and Chicago Public School administrators started to look at a potential name change for Cesar Chavez Multicultural Academy in the Back of the Yards.
Rep. Chavez (D-4th District) says nominations for the post office renaming project are due to his office next month.
