CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s airports are bracing for massive crowds Sunday as people return from Thanksgiving travel in greater numbers than last year.

About 1.2 million people are expected to have come through O’Hare International Airport around the holiday by Monday.  That’s a 155% increase over last year.

The Department of Aviation said projections from airlines show a 102% increase at Midway International Airport or some 288,000 thousand passengers.

High volume days Tuesday and Wednesday were practice for Sunday, which is expected to be the busiest day.

The department reminded travelers that masks are required at the airport and on planes and encourages people to get to the airport early.

They’ve made the first hour of short-term parking free at O’Hare to reduce traffic around the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration said it screened 2.2 million people at airports across the country Saturday or about 83% of pre-COVID pandemic levels.
