CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago aldermen are said to have agreed on a new city ward map, keeping the decision out of the hands of voters.
If at least 41 members of the City Council did not agree on a new ward map by a week from Thursday various maps would have been presented to voters to choose.
Now, though, Council Rules Committee Chairwoman Michelle Harris said there is an agreement on the so-called Chicago United Map.
Latinos make up the largest minority group in the city of Chicago, but according to a ward map that’s likely to get the nod of the City Council, there will be more Black majority wards than Latino majority wards.
The Chicago United Map has 17 wards that either have a black majority or a plurality and 14 wards in which Latinos have the majority.
The People’s Coalition criticizes the agreement as a backroom deal.
