CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Experts said highly corrosive saltwater may have been a major contributing factor in a southern Florida high-rise condo collapse and that Chicago area buildings are at very low risk of suffering the same fate.

Buildings in just a few southern counties of Florida require structural recertification every 40 years. As the Champlain Tower South building in Surfside, Florida was just coming up on a new inspection before its partial collapse.

Experts in the building industry told WBBM Newsradio that the policies there are now likely to change, making inspection necessary more often.

The reason for the inspections there on the structural integrity of buildings is due to highly corrosive environmental factors in southern Florida such as severe storms and salt water.

The experts said the Chicago area has a very low-risk climate for building deterioration.
