FOREST PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fall is upon us, and the question for many of us: To rake or not to rake?

Sean Zieche is a District Manager with Davey Tree in the western suburbs. He knows that some say you should not rake leaves because it's better for the environment.

“It comes down to what does your property look like. Do you have just simply turf throughout the entire property or do you have a forested area where you can naturally just allow it compost?” Zieche says.

Leaving leaves on the ground, leaves nutrients in the soil but also can lead to problems like mildew for other trees.

So, then again, maybe rake them up.

“If you just have a natural turf area, it’s going to be better to go ahead and clean them up, but maybe not get rid of them on the property,” says Zieche. “What you can do is you can go ahead and put them around some trees, put them in the mulch beds even. But, let’s say you have such an abundance of them, my recommendation is to get rid of them offsite. Put them out to the corner for the garbage man to grab them for you.”

Zieche says never pass up a chance to spend time with trees, especially in October.

“Go visit a forest preserve during these months,” Zieche says. “ It’s stunning out here! There’s a couple of places in the area that just have a quarter-mile loop that you could go on, it’s paved. Go for a walk. Go take a look at the changing colors. It’s again my favorite time of the year as well.”
