(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A North Side bakery and café have a special mission that's Made in Chicago.
It's the Hearts and Flour Bakery and Café on Ravenswood near Ridge run by Misericordia, which provides services to people with intellectual disabilities.
Father Jack Clair, who leads Misericordia, says the location makes Misericordia's famous baked goods and coffee, which they sell to raise money, available to many more people.
"They tell us 27,000 cars go by here a day. So, we're hoping to attract even a small percentage of that," he said.
But Clair says there's much more to the building than tasty treats.
"It's a three-story building. The second floor is a large room which will be one of our art studios, where the residents will be painting. It's a beautiful room, and then the third floor will be coffee production for sale to other places," said Clair.
Clair says it's all about helping Misericordia residents lead more productive lives.
"We're very hopeful that people will come through and keep these residents busy and even allow us to hire more if we need to, which would be great,” Clair said. “In this employment time, finding employees is difficult, but not at our place.”
