CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two children were hospitalized after they were shot on Friday night at the 31st Street Beach, Chicago police said.

It happened around 9 p.m. Police said there was a large gathering of young people. Someone in a car — described only as a silver sedan — fired shots.

Officials said a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were struck. The boy was shot in the leg, and the girl was shot in the back. Both were taken to hospitals in good condition.

Cell phone video showed dozens of young people running after the shooting. It also showed people assisting the boy with the leg wound on the bridge over Lake Shore Drive.

Activist Pastor Corey Brooks wrote on social media:

"Chicago's youth trends of spreading the word on social media to gather and cause mayhem must be addressed at every level. Tonight, an eighth grade girl was shot in the back. Our city deserves safer, more positive spaces for everyone."

The girl is a member of his church, New Beginnings, which is located in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

"We've got to do something to make sure they are not participating in these activities, because every time they have these trends, something happens," he said. "We have to figure out ways to make sure that we're not allowing these children to control and run the whole city."

The 31st Street Beach has been the scene of similar large gatherings and violence in the past.
