CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A hazmat situation at a North Side apartment building sent one resident to the hospital and prompted a building-wide evacuation Wednesday morning.
It was a carbon monoxide leak, officials said. The leak was reported around 9 a.m. and traced to the basement of a 10-story building near North Lake Shore Drive and West Roscoe Street.
Chicago fire crews responded and executed a precautionary evacuation of all units. The fire department's response included 10 ambulances and led to a partial closure of Inner Lake Shore Drive just north of Belmont Avenue.
One person who lives in an upper-floor apartment was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Carbon monoxide levels were back in the safe range by about 10:30 a.m.
