CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Southwest Side residents and activists sounded off on licensing for a metal shredding operation in Pilsen.

During the Council’s public comment period, representatives of the Southwest Environmental Alliance, Bridgeport Alliance and other groups pleaded with the city to reject the renewal for Sims Metal management to operate a metal shredding facility in Pilsen.

Emma Lozano, pastor of Lincoln United Methodist Church, said the area can’t stand more pollution than it already has.

“Our neighborhoods are contaminated [for] years operating without the proper ventilation and regulation that has caused Pilsen to be now the most contaminated community in the nation,” Lozano said.

Officials from Sims have said they are committed to complying with environmental regulations.
