CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It will likely be the latest in a series of contentious City Council votes, but Mayor Johnson today is expected to ask the council to once again reject an arbitration provision in the Chicago Police contract.
Arbitrator Edwin Benn has ruled that police officers facing the most serious disciplinary case have the right to submit those cases to arbitration, behind closed doors. Last month, the City Council rejected that finding, asking Benn to reconsider. He emphatically said he won't.
That sets up a potential court fight, but first there must be another City Council vote requiring at least 34 alderpersons to reject the ruling again.
Despite the mayor’s determination, backing that vote is not a sure thing.
Even the City’s own lawyers said it would be, at best, an uphill fight for the City to win a court fight over arbitration.
