(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Congressman Michael Quigley says there is very good reason to worry about what will happen to Ukraine in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House.

Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley is on the House Intelligence Committee and co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus. He is very worried that the Ukrainians could suffer more from Russian aggression now that Donald Trump will be president again.

Quigley says he was in Ukraine about a week ago, and officials there worry that the Russians will now be emboldened to be even more aggressive in the war. So does he.

“When we were voting the last year on Ukraine supplementals, which is as extreme a Soviet aggression as you can get, only about half of the Republicans would vote for that, a little less than half,” Quigley said.

“Where does, where does that go now when you have a president who has called Putin, complimentary terms, likes Putin, supports him.”

He says President-elect Trump speaks in favorable tones about Russian President Vladimir Putin, and incoming Vice-President Senator JD Vance says Ukraine is not worth saving.

“It enables the far right on the Republican side to go even to the greater extreme, which will influence policy, not just in Ukraine, but in the Pacific Rim and obviously, you know, with China.”

Now Quigley says there are serious concerns about the outlooks for China, Taiwan and NATO.

Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley is the guest on our At Issue program, you can hear a lot more at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
