CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city of Chicago could join Cook County and the state in charging a tax on sports betting.

Chicago aldermen will consider a 2% sports betting tax, which would be in addition to the 2% Cook County tax and a 15% state levy.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot has said the city will have costs related to sports betting facilities in and around five Chicago stadiums and sports arenas, including infrastructure and regulatory oversight.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the proposed city tax has done little to appease the owner of Rush Street Gaming, which is one of the groups hoping to build a casino in Chicago and worries sports betting will reduce the amount casinos would earn.
