CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It was a not-so-typical call for two Chicago police officers early Tuesday.

The pair responded to an EMS call near the corner of Kedzie and North Avenue in Humboldt Park for a vehicle pulled over — with a woman in labor inside.

The baby was already crowning by the time they arrived. So, Officer Lizzette Lozada and Probationary Police Officer Hoong Giang from the 14th District helped deliver the baby in the passenger seat of the car.

“The baby came out, landed in my arms and I handed the baby to the mother,” said Officer Giang, who’s only been on the job for about eight months.

Added Officer Lozada: “I stepped away for about a minute to try and get something to wrap the baby in, and by the time I came back, he had the baby in his hands.”

Both the mother and newborn were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in good condition.

“Congratulations to the mother, and I'm glad they’re both healthy and safe,” Lozada said.
