The gates of the Friendly Confines are opening soon. The Chicago Cubs celebrated their upcoming season by giving away 2,024 free tickets across the city on Thursday.

“We’ve been through locations throughout the city today, and UIC is one of our stops,” said Jennifer Martinez, Cubs senior director of communications.

University of Illinois Chicago was one of the destinations the Cubs decided to hit up. Hundreds of students crowded UIC’s quad in an effort to snag the free tickets. The Cubs announcer, a.k.a. “The voice of Wrigley Field,” Jeremiah Paprocki, advocated for his alma mater to be a stop on the free ticket tour.

“We were at the Tribune Tower this morning giving away tickets; We were also at Van Buren and State and there’s other locations and more coming,” said Martinez.

The Cubs also took to social media to reach fans that were unable to attend the giveaways in person. Posts asked fans to reply with a photo in their Cubs gear for a chance to win.

Cubs spring training begins Friday against the Chicago White Sox. The Cubs will open the 2024 season Thursday, March 28 against the Rangers in Texas.
