CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Major league baseball in Chicago is taking a big step toward the way things used to be.
Both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox announced Thursday that following approval from the State of Illinois and City of Chicago, the teams are approved to increase capacity to 60 percent.
The change goes into effect at Wrigley Field when the Cubs begin their three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on May 28. The change goes into effect at Guaranteed Rate Field beginning Monday, May 24 when the Sox take on the St. Louis Cardinals.
Additionally, beginning Friday afternoon, Guaranteed Rate Field will feature two vaccinated-only sections for four games this weekend. Beginning with Game 1 of the doubleheader against Kansas City on Friday at 2:10 p.m., fans who purchase tickets in the designated vaccinated-only sections located in Sections 108-109 will present their vaccination cards or other proof that they have been fully vaccinated, along with a photo ID upon entering the ballpark. Fans holding tickets in these sections will be seated without physical distancing.
Wrigley Field will also feature a designated area specifically for fully vaccinated fans for the Cubs four-game series against the Washington Nationals May 17-20. The upper section of the center field Budweiser Bleachers will be designated for fully vaccinated fans. This area will be sold at full capacity and seats will not be physically distanced. Single game tickets located in this area will go on sale Thursday at 3 p.m. All tickets in the fully vaccinated area will be $20 plus applicable taxes and fees. Those who purchase these tickets will be required to present proof of vaccination and a photo ID.
“I’m happy to say that we worked with both the Sox and the Cubs, and of course the City of Chicago as well, to make sure that at the next home games they’ll create a section in each of those ballparks for those who have been vaccinated," Governor Pritzker announced Thursday.
The Chicago Cubs added that the health and safety protocols enacted at the start of the regular season will remain in place until further notice. Face coverings will still be required for guests 2-years or older unless actively eating or drinking while seated even in the fully vaccinated area. In addition, Cubs tickets will be available exclusively as mobile tickets through the MLB Ballpark app and all purchases at Wrigley Field will remain cashless.
