(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago City Council on Thursday expanded the local ordinance that requires employers to grant employees paid sick leave and vacation time.

By a 36-12 vote, alderpersons approved a system under which full-time workers will accrue least five paid sick days and five additional days off, beginning in 2024.

The measure comes over the objections of some business groups. Auburn Gresham Ald. David Moore, 17th, said philanthropic McDonald's franchise owners felt like their concerns were not heard.

But Hyde Park Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd, said the measure was reworked with input from numerous business owners.

"I'm always looking for a win-win, especially when compromise is necessary," she said. "And this should be a win for both the employer and the employee."

Thursday evening's meeting featured none of the drama of Tuesday's meeting, which ended with Mayor Johnson casting a tie-breaking vote against censuring ally Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, 35th.
