(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Fire Department issued a warning about lithium batteries and the potential for fires.
These batteries are everywhere – cell phones, laptops, scooters, bikes, power tools and vaping devices. Increasingly, they're causing fires.
Additionally, they're blamed for an increasing number of fires. The Chicago Fire Department put together a public service announcement, with some advice.
"If the lithium battery is bulging, leaking or has a strange odor, these are clear signs that it is defective," the department says in the public service announcement.
The fire department says look for certification from Underwriters Laboratories, or UL.
Also, never mix and match chargers and batteries.
