CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A report looking at traffic in several major cities puts Chicago at the top of the list when it comes to vehicle crashes at intersections.

Bob Pishue is a transportation analyst for INRIX, which collects traffic data for government and the private sector. He compared Chicago to Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

He said Chicago had the highest rate of crashes at intersections, 18% above the national average. He said it's partly due to increasing traffic as more people return to workplaces following the COVID pandemic, as well as higher rates of speed than before the pandemic.

“More congestion usually means slower speeds, right? You’re bumper to bumper traffic, but then, what we’re seeing are a little bit higher speeds on the arterial streets, the connecting roads, so I think that is where a lot of the focus should be on,” Pishue said.

“I think it’s important to holistically take a look at this and just be aware, a little bit more aware. There’s a lot of running of red lights, so pay attention to what’s going on around you,” Pishue added.

The report found the corners in Chicago with the highest rate of crashes were Rockwell and Cermak, followed by Fairbanks and Erie.
