CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A plan to loosen restrictions on home businesses in Chicago stalled before a City Council committee.
Alderman Gilbert Villegas, who chairs the City Council Committee on Economic and Capital Development, wants to overhaul city rules on what home businesses can and cannot do.
His proposal would allow a licensed home business to occupy more space in a home and even an accessory building or structure. Materials for the business could be stored on-site.
But when the time came to consider the measure at a hearing, Villegas indicated there was a hold up.
"The ordinance will be heard next month where we hope to finalize some details in the ordinance," he said. "Time is of the essence and I hope to work with the administration to get this ordinance passed as there are hundreds of small businesses that could take advantage of this opportunity."
Villegas told the Sun-Times that the city’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Department wants some language included that he’s previously felt was outdated. So, discussions continue.
Even under the rewrite, some things would still be prohibited, like vehicle repairs; selling firearms or ammunition; and tattoo, nail, and hair salons.
