CHICAGO CITY HALL (WBBM Newsradio) -- Two closed Chicago-area hospitals may one day treat patients again, now that their owner has agreed to sell the facilities as part of a deal to put them in new hands.
Advocates have been fighting for years to preserve Weiss Memorial Hospital, 4646 N. Marine Dr., on Chicago's North side and West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, saying those safety-net hospitals are crucial parts of the health care network, especially for working and low-income people. Last week, a judge granted a request to appoint an administrator to oversee the facilities, in a process called receivership.
Now, the owner of both hospitals has agreed to sell them to its minority partner, who has agreed to work with administrators at Bronzeville's Insight Hospital, 2525 S. Michigan Ave., to renew Weiss' license, get both facilities re-accredited, and hopefully re-opened.
Weiss closed last summer and West Suburban closed back in March.
Insight's CEO released a statement saying in part the hospital expects to begin what he called a careful assessment of both properties to figure out an appropriate path forward for each. Advocates for re-opening the hospitals say they're planning to meet with representatives of Insight to discuss a timetable for the future of both facilities.
