CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Calling all Latino playwrights. The Chicago Latino Theater Alliance is asking for play submissions for its first ever playwright festival.
The festival is called “Inicios,” which means beginning.
Chicago Latino Theater Alliance Executive Director Jorge Valdivia said Inicios was born out of the need for more Latino representation in Chicago theater.
"When you look at the theater landscape in Chicago, our stories, for the most part, were not being told at major theaters, and, so, there was really an opportunity to address this concern,” Valdivia said.
He said the festival allows more Latino stories to be heard.
"I think this provides a unique opportunity for us to sort of become aware of other work that may have been under the radar or simply haven't had the opportunity to have been brought to full production,” added Valdivia.
Valdivia said plays have the chance to be selected for workshops and staged readings at theaters throughout Chicago. He said the festival invites Latino playwrights in Chicago to submit plays that represent the Latino experience and culture.
"We're really looking for something that's unique, a story that is the intersection between what it's like to be someone who's Latino and someone who is from Chicago or it could also be someone who is born and raised in Chicago,” Valdivia said.
The deadline to apply is April 21, and the festival will take place June 2 through June 4.
