The new program, called Next Stage Chicago, will provide a maximum of $50,000 to up to eight nonprofit theater companies that have been in business for between three and 10 years.
The goal is to invest in arts and culture organizations are "essential to the vitality of Chicago's neighborhoods," according to the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).
The department says the initiative also reflects "DCASE's broader commitment to strengthening Chicago's cultural ecosystem through strategic investments, funding opportunities and resources that help artists and organizations thrive in every neighborhood."
The funds came partially from a Pritzker Foundation grant and are designed to help companies build their audiences, strengthen their infrastructure and expand their artistic impact.
Those eligible must have an annual operating budget of $500,000 or less and “demonstrate a commitment to producing and presenting theatrical work.”
Applications for Next Stage Chicago are open now and close at noon Wednesday, July 8 at 12 p.m.
