(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Only a few weeks ago, Conor Bezane moved from Chicago to take care of his elderly parents, who live in Lahaina. Now, they’re starting to run out of food.
"All the neighbors are rallying together and helping each other. One of our neighbors brought us some fish stew yesterday and some cinnamon rolls,” Bezane told WBBM Newsradio on Friday.
That generous neighbor has solar power. Bezane and his family, who live a few miles from the fire zone on Maui, are without electricity. This is why they haven’t seen the extent of the damage to Lahaina.
"It hasn't set in, what happened, because we haven't seen pictures of it. It's not like we have electric power to watch television news or anything like that,” Bezane said.
Bezane says his father thinks government officials ought to have contacted them by now.
"He thinks we should be hearing from the mayor. It's been quiet. It's been radio silence."
Now, the rumor is that the water may go off. If that happens, they'll have to evacuate, Bezane said.
