CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she expects to announce a vaccine mandate for all City of Chicago employees soon.

The Chicago Public Schools system is requiring all teachers and staff to have gotten the vaccine. Cook County has mandated that all of its workers be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Speaking in the Back of the Yards area, Mayor Lightfoot said Chicago will have a mandate, too, for its city employees.

"City employees are absolutely going to be required to be vaccinated. We are working through those discussions, which have been ongoing now for a couple of weeks with our colleagues in organized labor that represent city employees; but we absolutely have to have a vaccine mandate," Lightfoot said.

"It's for the safely of all involved, particularly members of the public who are interacting with city employees on a daily basis. It's important for colleagues to also feel like they have a workplace that is safe, so a vaccine mandate from the city will come and we will make specific announcements in the coming days."
