(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An alliance of transportation advocates is appealing to Mayor Brandon Johnson to carefully consider his choice for Chicago's next transportation commissioner.

More than a dozen groups have signed onto a letter spelling out the qualities they want to see in the successor to Gia Biagi, a holdover from the Lightfoot Administration who resigned as head of the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Kyle Lucas, co-founder of Better Streets Chicago, says the appointment will be one of Johnson's most consequential choices. He hopes the mayor will tap someone who is bold, empowered and collaborative.

Transportation advocates would like a commissioner who focuses on people more than the movement of private vehicles, Lucas said.

Chicago has seen a rise in traffic deaths and challenges because of mobility issues and racial inequities, he said.
