CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - As Chicagoans brave the cold this week, the City is reminding residents to take advantage of city resources and services.
The City's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) says more than 190 public facilities are open and functioning as places to get warm. These include participating Chicago Public Library locations, Chicago Park District, Chicago Police Department and City Colleges of Chicago facilities.
OEMC adds that there are six additional warming centers: Englewood Community Service Center, Garfield Community Service Center, Martin Luther King Community Service Center, North Area Community Service Center, South Chicago Community Service Center and Trina Davilia Community Service Center.
To find the closest warming center, residents can contact 311, that number can also be contacted for those who require emergency overnight shelter.
Residents are also encouraged to check on relatives, neighbors and friends on particularly colder days.
The City is also reminding residents of the Chicago Heat Ordinance, which requires landlords and buildings to supply adequate heat and functioning heat equipment or they'll have to pay a fine.
Temperatures will be below freezing until the weekend, AccuWeather says, with Thursday night’s low falling to 16 degrees. Wind chills will dip below zero. Friday, it will remain quite brisk, reaching a high of 30 degrees.
