CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Park District held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday morning for a North Side community center.
The Clarendon Park Community Center in Uptown hasn’t been updated in more than 40 years. It was originally built in 1916 as a beach bathhouse, the park district said.
Thanks to Chicago City Council’s recent approval of $10 million in TIF benefits, though, the Chicago Park District can move forward with its plans for extensive renovations.
Those renovations include upgraded finishes and lighting, new fitness room equipment, and reworked landscaping. The project will also address water infiltration issues and make the facility fully ADA accessible.
Construction was expected to begin in fall 2021, the park district said. It’s unclear when the project will be completed.
Plans for the project may be viewed here.
