Chicago Park District suspends in-person winter programming amid surge in COVID-19

Programs will resume once state public health guidance allows

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If your New Year’s resolution was to workout at a Chicago Park District facility, you’ll have to make alternate plans.

There will be no open basketball at Addams Park, ceramics at the South Shore Cultural Center, or badminton at McKinley Park.

The Chicago Park District suspended the start of in-person, winter programs scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 4, in accordance with Illinois' Tier 3 mitigation plan to suppress the spread of COVID-19.

However, the park district is offering some virtual classes, ranging from abs and core to water safety and ballet conditioning. Patrons who have registered for in-person winter programs will receive prorated credit that can be applied to future programs.

“The Chicago Park District is committed to protecting our patrons and workforce by following the guidelines put in place by public health officials,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly. “While we are unable to offer in-person opportunities at this time, families can register for a menu of engaging, virtual programs as well as pre-recorded classes and other unique park experiences, including virtual walks, story time and fitness workouts.”

Fieldhouses will remain open for restrooms and shelters during the regular hours of operation, as well as outdoor parks and trails. Trail users are required to keep it moving. Masks are mandatory.

Ice skatings is still being offered at the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon and other outdoor rinks. Reservations are required.

The Chicago Park District will continue to monitor updates from the state and will resume in-person programs when a move to Tier 2 is announced.
