CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police took to the field Sunday to help a few dozen children get better at baseball and get ready for the new school year.

Chicago Police Officer Eric Bermudez was with fellow officers handing out school supplies and t-shirts, and coaching baseball to kids at Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park on the West Side.

“Some families, for whatever reason, they have some hard times, just like we did when we were young…We’re out here to help as much as we can with the resources that we have,” Bermudez said. “We have a unique opportunity, given the platform that we have as Chicago police officers. We interact with so many different people on different occasions, for good or bad…Being able to come out here, back into our community, give back, interact with our youth, [we] show them outside of the badge who we are as individuals.”

Officer Eduardo Echeverria plays left field for the Knights.

“It was a dream to become a baseball player, yes, but then being a police officer for sure, engaging my community and still being able to do what I love to do, which is playing baseball and showing the fun side of police officers,” Echeverria said.
