CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There’s fallout from the Chicago Police Department’s handling of the still-mysterious incident during which two women were wounded by gunshots in the stands during a Sox game last month.
Acting Superintendent Fred Waller, on his last day on the job, demoted the commander of the patrol bureau, John Spellman, who had been working as a supervisor for the team’s private security firm.
The Sun Times reported Spellman had been working at the ballpark without clearance from the superintendent.
It wasn’t until nearly an hour after the shooting that he informed the team that Patrol Chief Brian McDermott wanted to stop the game for public safety reasons.
Waller had said the fact that didn’t happen was on him.
According to a Sun-Times source, there was concern that Spellman may have prioritized the interests of the team over the department and stalled in delivering McDermott’s request to stop the game.
