(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Inspector General says an analysis of police traffic stops shows that those encounters with motorists “consistently disadvantaged Black people and consistently advantaged white people.”

The IG looked at traffic stops and use-of-force incidents from October 2017 through February 2020, and its report says there was “strong evidence of race-based disparities.”

Specifically, Blacks were disproportionately stopped by police and disproportionately subjected to force, regardless of the demographic composition of the district or the crime level in the district, the report said.

The report says Black drivers’ vehicles were three times more likely to be searched than the vehicles of white drivers.

The Office of Inspector General did not make recommendations but asked the police department to respond. The office said says Chicago Police Department officials indicated they had “made great strides in training” and have revised policies.
