CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Reader will return to weekly publishing for the first time since 2020, the publication announced over the weekend.

Officials said the paper will resume weekly publishing in June 2024.

The Reader, which was founded in 1971, transitioned to a biweekly publishing schedule in 2020. At the time, Reader leadership cited COVID-19 shutdowns as a factor that led to a nearly 90% drop in advertising spending.

Current leadership said returning to a weekly publishing schedule will allow the alt-weekly to get “back in rhythm” when it comes to reporting on “Chicago’s creative, civic and cultural concerns.”

A weekly publishing schedule should also allow the paper to get access to more funding — both public and private, officials said.
