CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - At their meeting Thursday night, the local police district council for the area where Dexter Reed was shot and killed last month asked residents to show restraint.

One of the 11th Police District Council members told residents at its monthly meeting, “We must realize these exceptionally violent events are part of a pattern that are bigger than us and our anger.”

Jasmine Smith, with the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, questioned if the tactical officers who killed Dexter Reed in a shootout will be disciplined.

“They’re never held accountable for their actions, Smith said. “How do you ask young teenage boys to respect people that can just kill them and just walk away scot-free?”

Activist Miracle Boyd told members of the 11th Police District Council the department should not be allowed to fire 96 shots on any residential block, at any civilian, under any circumstance.

In a letter to Superintendent Larry Snelling, COPA’s Chief Administrator Andrea Kersten questioned whether the officers were telling the truth when they said they stopped Reed for a seatbelt violation and urged Snelling to strip the four officers of their police powers.
