CHICAGO CITY HALL (WBBM Newsradio) -- The year-long search for a new leader for Chicago's public schools is apparently nearing an end.
The Chicago Board of Education is now set to vote Monday, March 30 on a resolution to hire interim district CEO Dr. Macquline King, for the permanent position.
She's overseen the district's operations for the entire school year, following the board's decision to fire schools chief Pedro Martinez without cause at the end of 2024.
The Chicago native is a former teacher, principal and City Hall adviser, who was one of two candidates sitting for interviews this week with Mayor Brandon Johnson. He gave reporters an update on the process on March 24: "Those conversations that I've been having with these two candidates have been very strong conversations."
Dr. King's tenure has included leading the board to approve a budget for this school year that did not include short-term borrowing called for by Mayor Johnson and his allies.
Board sources say she's expected to have strong support, with one source characterizing it as a "done deal."
