CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A wild weather week looks like it will become even more eventful.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of the Chicago area. The alert is for counties such as Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, and Will Counties in Illinois, and for Indiana, Lake Porter, Newton and Jasper Counties. The NWS anticipates the storm entering the area Friday morning and sticking around until the evening hours.
With temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, the precipitation is expected to start as snow, then become sleet or, in some areas- particularly south and east of the city, plain rain before returning to snow. AccuWeather forecasts 6 to 10 inches of snow to fall in Chicago and northern and western suburbs, while south and east of the city will see 3 to 6 inches.
The snow will be its heaviest in the afternoon, according to the NWS, falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Driving will become treacherous, with wind gusts up to 45 mph, creating poor visibility. By Friday night, temperatures will tumble into the 20s and roads could turn icy.
The good news: The winter blast will be brief. We will see temperatures in the mid 40s both on Saturday and Sunday. Monday’s expected high is 54 degrees, AccuWeather says.
