Before millions of dollars’ worth of iconic sports memorabilia goes on display and up for auction in Rosemont this week, we’re getting a sneak peek at some of the offerings.

“The hobby is in a wonderful spot.”

Heritage Auctions HQ on West Hubbard Street is currently a treasure trove of sports history.

“It’s just funny how things have evolved and what this hobby has turned into. There’s been so much growth, cards, memorabilia, everything. It’s just amazing to me.”

All of which are headed to the annual Sports Collectors Convention this week.

Tony Giese of Heritage Auctions says baseball bats belonging to Ernie Banks and Jackie Robinson, gear worn by Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan, even the game-used ball from the 1986 “Hand of God” FIFA World Cup match will all be there.

“It may not be won by a soccer fan. It may be won by a guy who just has to have the best of the best. Often times, you’re pulling from such a wide area of people buying this stuff. It’s not just collectors anymore.”
